Konomien is the only tea producer in Japan that keeps traditional tea hand-kneading method from Edo period, known as “Hoiro-shiki”.

Horio is a working table traditaionally used for kneading tea leaves. The surface is heated by charcoal fire and tea leaves are carefully rolled by craftmen on Yame handmade paper. This roasting method is something additional to the normal Sencha production and takes longer period of time. It lets tea leaves dry slowly and traps the great taste and aroma of Gyokuro.

Konomien has first started wholesaler business in Yame, Fukuoka over 300 years ago. After handling handmade paper, wooden materials, and tea sales, they have started to focus on tea related business and become the oldest tea shop in Kyushu area.
